If you've never ridden a moped before then the windy, dirt roads of a Greek island probably aren't the best place to start. But that doesn't stop hundreds of travellers from revving up each summer – then speeding round some hair-pin bends wearing little more than shorts and a t-shirt.

'Teenagers think they're invincible and we get more bike accidents among young holidaymakers than almost anything else,' says Ben. 'Most of the accidents involve first-time riders – and if you take a real pounding you can be in hospital for up to ten days before it's safe to fly home.'

Mixing up your medicines

Every summer some travellers will run out of essential medication, others will decide they're feeling well enough to stop taking it – and some may accidentally swallow the wrong pills altogether. All three scenarios can end badly.

'Trying to get extra medication isn't easy if you don't speak the language so take a copy of your prescription as well as your drug packaging,' says Ben.

Best advice is to take twice what you need to see you through your holiday and to put half in your suitcase and half in your hand luggage. Then watch what else you take when you're abroad.

'A while ago we had a call about a lady on holiday in Ibiza with her family,' says Ben. 'One night she had a migraine and took what she thought was an aspirin from her granddaughter's bag. No prizes for guessing that it was a different type of pill altogether.

'Two hours later she had a heart attack while she was walking half-naked through the hotel lobby. Her granddaughter had a massive panic attack when she found out what had happened – and they both needed a lot of help on the flight home.'

Not paying enough attention

We all want to switch off on holiday – but we do need to keep our wits about us as well. Every year repatriation doctors get the call when people dive into the shallow end of a swimming pool by mistake, walk into traffic on crowded streets or break some bones falling down polished marble steps in castles or cathedrals.

One traveller was in such a hurry to get to the sun that he didn't spot the plate glass door at his holiday airport. He broke his nose and fractured his skull walking into it – and ended up being flown home before he even got to his hotel.

A tour operator who has more than 12,000 holiday makers currently abroad collapsed yesterday. This is a prime example of why travel insurance is a necessary these days. In these unsteady times companies can go bankrupt at a moment’s notice.
